    History[edit | edit source]

Beginning of the Empire (1402–1521)[edit | edit source]

Enrique III of Castile (1390–1406) began the colonization of the Canary Islands by concluding a feudal agreement (1402) with the Norman nobleman Jean de Betancourt. The conquest of the Canary Islands, inhabited by the Guanches, ended with the victory of Castilian troops in a long and bloody war and the capture of the islands of Gran Canaria (1478-1483), La Palma (1492-1493) and Tenerife (1494-1496).

The marriage (1469) of the Reyes Católicos Ferdinand II of Aragon and Isabella I of Castile led to a union of crowns, each of which had its own apparatus of government. According to Henry Kamen, only after several centuries of union did these separate kingdoms become a fully united state.

In 1492, Spain conquered the last Muslim state on the peninsula, the Emirate of Granada. During his First Voyage (1492), Columbus discovered a continent previously unknown to Europeans and began its colonization. Castile became involved in the Age of Discovery, and the East Indies fell into its sphere of influence.

Spanish claims to these lands were confirmed by the papal bull Inter caetera (1493) and secured by the Treaty of Tordesillas (1494), according to which the pope divided the world into two hemispheres between Spain and Portugal. Thus, Spain acquired exclusive “rights” to seize colonies throughout the New World from Alaska to Cape Horn (except Brazil), as well as the easternmost regions of Asia. The Spanish Empire arose as a result of rapid colonial expansion in the New World, and the conquest of colonial possessions in Africa: Castile captured Melilla (1497), Mers-el-Kebir (1505) and neighboring Oran (1509). Spanish expansion and colonization significantly influenced the country's economy, increased national prestige and contributed to the spread of Catholicism in the New World.

The Spanish kings pursued a policy hostile to France. Their children intermarried with the royal families of Portugal, England, and the Habsburgs. Spain supported the House of Aragon in Naples against King Charles VIII of France and went to war (from 1494) against France and the Republic of Venice for control of Italy. The Italian wars occupied a central place in the foreign policy of King Ferdinand. From this time on, the Spanish army claimed superiority on European battlefields until the 17th century.

After the death of Queen Isabella, Ferdinand, becoming the only monarch (1502-1516), began to pursue an even more aggressive policy. He sided with France against Venice at the Battle of Agnadello (1509). A year later, Ferdinand joined the Holy League against France, claiming the Kingdom of Naples, with which he had dynastic ties, and the Kingdom of Navarre through his marriage to Germaine de Foix. This war was not so successful. In 1516 France agreed to a truce. Milan came under French control, and France recognized Spanish authority in Northern Navarre.

After colonizing Hispaniola at the beginning of the 16th century, the Spaniards began to look for new places for expansion. Hispaniola was not doing very well, and its new inhabitants were ready to try their luck in new places. From here Ponce de Leon set out to conquer Puerto Rico, while Diego Velazquez headed to Cuba. The first colony on the American mainland, Santa Maria la Antigua del Darien in Panama, was founded by Vasco Nunez de Balboa (1512). In 1513, Balboa crossed the Isthmus of Panama and became the first European to reach the Pacific Ocean by land. Balboa declared the Pacific Ocean and all open lands the property of the Spanish Crown.
